Magnesium burns so intensely and hot in an oxygen atmosphere ( or air ) that when the burning metal is thrust into acarbon dioxide atmosphere it is hot and reactive enough to use the oxygen in the CO2 as the oxygen source. ... This reaction is a combustion and oxidation.

the magnesium ribbon burns in the atmosphere of CO2 because magnesium reacts with the oxygen present in CO2 to form magnesium oxide.
