Why does magnesium ribbon start floating after sometime when dropped in water

When magnesium is added in the water a chemical reaction occurs and hydrogen gas is produced. H2 is lighter so it comes up, but the reaction soon stops as magnesium hydro oxide is formed that is insoluble in water and acts as barrier for further reaction and starts floating on the surface.
