Why does magnesium ribbon starts floating on hot water

Magnesium ribbon starts floating in hot water as it is lighter than water. It reacts slowly with boiling water to form MgO and H2.

As the reaction is not much exothermic so the hydrogen released do not burn and stick to the surface of magnesium ribbon, making it light and makes it to float.
