Autogamy can occur only if transfer of pollen grains from anther of flower to stigma of same flower takes place.
It requires bisexual flower ( male & female parts in same flower).
Maize has unisexual flowers i.e, male and female flower are separate but present on same plant.
So, geitonogamy occurs, transfer of pollen grains from anther of one flower to stigma of another flower of same plant takes place...
Maize don't have bisexual flower but plant is bisexual which prevents autogamy but not geitonogamy...
To prevent geitonogamy, unisexual plant is required like papaya...
