However, larger animals display more personality and seem more sentient do to that fact. It also helps that larger animals do not persistently buzz in your face and annoy you to death. We see more of ourselves in these animals because they act on a more sentient level and demonstrate emotions.

I believe it can be ranked on a scale of 1-5:*

1.

Is a bug, no demonstrable emotions, the creature is small and disgusting. This creature is merely all instinct and nothing that makes it any different from the next one. Size means killing it and going on about your day is easy—no real cleanup of the corpse is required. Most people do not care about killing bugs.

2.

Slightly more complex: These are the fish in the ocean, lizards and reptiles. They show more complexity than the former; however, they do no show much emotion or affection. Killing them is a bit more of a task, because there is a corpse not just a pile of guts. We can see more of the “life” in the organisms and each one—especially the reptiles each one has different slight “quirks.” Most people would be put off by killing one of these, especially for no apparent reason.

3.

Birds: These life forms have a personality, while they do not demonstrate it as much as mammals, each one has its owns “life.” While some show more personality than others—Cockatoos are extremely expressive—they generally show some. Turkeys for example do not show as much. Birds can show a mild amount of affection, more or less depending on the species. The death of these animals can be a bigger deal, especially on the more personable ones—like the cockatoo.

4.

Mammals and livestock: These are animals such as cattle and other large farm animals. Each one of these animals has a personality and it can be easy to become attached to. However, one can still ignore this fact and send them off to be butchered without too much regret.

5.

Pets: These are the critters that we love and keep by our sides as companions. Creatures such as cats and dogs, each one of these as a clear personality and emotions. They have recordable likes and dislikes and show them. These creatures show affection and have clear opinions on things. These creatures are much more “sentient” than the others and the death of one can be very upsetting to a person—sometimes like losing a loved one.

*Disclaimer: I know that some people keep lizards or birds as pets. This categorical list is based off my personal opinions on the subject matter. This is by no means a scientific analysis.

Answer:

Man continuously wages war on them, for

they contaminate his food, carry diseases or devour his crops. They sting or bite

without provocation, they fly uninvited into our rooms on summer nights, or beat

against our lighted windows. We live in dread not only of unpleasant insects like

spiders or wasps, but of quite harmless ones like moths. Reading about them

increases our understanding without dispelling our fears. Knowing that the

industrious ants live in a highly organized society does not prevent us from being

filled with revulsion when we find hordes of them crawling over a carefully prepared

picnic lunch.
