The Mathura refinery release chemicals like sulphur which rise into the atmosphere, mix with rain and oxygen and cause acid rain which corrodes the marble of Taj Mahal. This causes yellowing of Taj Mahal. That is why, the Mathura refinary has been closed.

Mathura refinery releases many air pollutants such as Sulphur dioxide and it reacts with water in the atmosphere to form of sulphuric acid. This sulphuric acid is washed away into the soil by rain through acid rainfall. This acid erodes the stone, surface of buildings affect salmon reproduction ,brick works etc.
Thus posing a great threat to Tajmahal as they can destroy the marble quality its, colour etc.
