Answer:

The menstrual cycle occurs due to the rise and fall of hormones. This cycle results in the thickening of the lining of the uterus, and the growth of an egg, (which is required for pregnancy). If pregnancy does not occur, the lining is released in what is known as menstruation.

A mature ovary releases an ova or egg once every 28 days by the process called ovulation. The uterus prepares to receive a fertilized egg every month. So its inner lining (endometrium) becomes thick and spongy to nourish the developing embryo . if the egg is not fertilized, by the sperm it lives only for about one day and then the endometrium lining slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous. This is called menstrual cycle or mensuration.

Additional information :

  • Mensuration is discharge of endometrial lining in the form of blood and mucus, out of the body .
  • It occurs 14 days after ovalution.
  • It lasts for about 2 - 8 days .
  • After mensuration, the inner lining of the uterus repairs and becomes ready to receive the next ovum again.
  • Mensuration indicates absence of fertilization.
  • Mensuration only occurs if the released ovum is not fertilized .
  • Lack of mensuration may be indicative of pregnancy. However, it may also caused due to some other underlying causes like to stress ,poor health etc.
  • During pregnancy , there is no mensuration and ovulation.
