Why does metal wire offer resistance when connected to a battery?

In a metal there are many free electrons and positively charged atoms these free electrons move in any direction the like. But when the metal wire connected to a battery, these electrons move in a definite direction. Thus the obstruction caused to the electrons during their movement is known as resistance.
