Frank made the remark about what the schools had been reduced to while speaking to Taplow. Taplow mentioned that Mr Crocker Harris was not a sadist, but some other teachers did fall under that category as they took pleasure in the students' pain. He went on to add that some masters considered the boys to be mad and know nothing, but Frank was considerably younger to them and was also a man of science. To this, Frank made the remark in shocked surprise.
