Why does mrs slater instruct victoria to change the dress?

Mrs. Slater instructed victoria to change her dress because of mr. able marryweather's( his grandfather's )  death

She wanted to outshine the Jordan's. She was not at all sad about her father's death but she is concerned about the mourning dresses.Since her father has expired , she instructs her daughter Victoria to change her colourful dresses into something sober , before the guests and relatives arrive.
