This is going to sound strange, but I have always been curious about this...why does my belly button have an odor if I rub my finger inside of it and smell it? Is this normal? There is no odor unless I make direct contact like with my finger and smell it.

Thanks,

Answer:

I just asked my physician that question last week, as I have an *innie* belly button. He said, belly button is a closed area where it's warm and moist in there and bacteria is trapped in there along with oil, that don't ever get fresh air, and can get an overgrowth of bacteria or thrush. This would explain the foul smelling.

Follow the instructions below if you really want a throughly cleaned belly button.

How to Clean Your Belly Button:

Belly buttons are one of the hardest areas on your body to clean. Some people have lint and dirt in their belly button. Here is how to clean your belly button and make your body clean.

Instructions:

Step 1. Gather your supplies. You will need a few cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol to safely clean out your navel.

Step 2. Give yourself plenty of time. You could hurt yourself rushing. Be very patient.

Step 3. Dip one head of the cotton swab into the rubbing alcohol and gently stretch one side of your belly button with one hand. Rest the other hand (the one with the swab) in such a way it stretches out the other side of your navel.

Step 4. Gently work your way around the belly button.

Step 5. Discard old swabs and repeat the process if your navel is still dirty.

*Tips*

-Don't push too hard. Be gentle!

-Also another important tip for those whose belly buttons are clean but smell bad and the skin is red. Use a wash that is for sensitive skin (you can also use femine wash). The most common reason why belly buttons smell is that when you wash with bar soap and do not rinse well your skin becomes dry and irritated.

-Q-tips are the same thing as cotton swabs, they are just a brand name.

-Using the rubbing alcohol shouldn't burn, unless you have a cut or sore in your navel. But, if for some reason it does irritate you try Witch Hazel. Hydrogen Peroxide works as well.

-Your belly button is a closed, healed area of your stomach, nothing should be able to enter that way. Ask your doctor if it concerns you.

Other Suggests:

Stinky belly button can result from an imbalance in body chemistry. Try cleansing your belly button with a q-tip dipped in tea tree oil twice-a-day for a week. It's great for clearing up bacteria and Fungus Pulmonary Aspergilloma (mycetoma) and will likely resolve it. Good Luck! :)
