Why does Nerissa call Bassanio a soldier??

Nerissa calls Bassanio a scholar and a soldier and thus praises him.She doesn't really mean it but she only tells what Portia wants to hear.

Nerissa calls Bassanio as a soldier because he was in the company of marquis(man of high social rank) de montferrat. Therefore she mistook him as a soldier.
