A nod of the head is a gesture in which the head is tilted up and down,as if following a curve. In many cultures, it is most commonly, but not universally, used to indicate agreement, or acknowledgement.
A head shake is a gesture in which the head is turned to the left and the right,in a quick manner. In many cultures, it is most commonly,but not universally, used to indicate disagreement or rejection.
And these gestures,are accepted by people,around the world,so that's the reason they're used.
