Why does not a wall immediately aquire white colour when a coating of slaked lime is applied on it?

when a wall is coated of slaked lime it doesn't show immediate white colour because the calcium hydroxide when reacts with carbon dioxide then it shows white colour but this reaction is slow and needs minimim of 2 to 3 days
