Burning of wool is a test for proving the material .  WOOL is obtained from hair of sheep . Thus , it smells like burning hair . Cotton after refining and converting into a textile , if we burn it to test , it will smell like burning paper. Paper, a plant product and converted by humans  and it same goes for cotton textile . Thus cotton being a plant product and human made it smells like burning paper.
