Why does one Oxygen atom bond with two Hydrogen atoms to form water? Why don't they bond in a different ratio?

Because the electronic configuration of Oxygen is (2,6)

Thus it requires only 2 atoms to complete it's octet

Thus 2 atoms of Hydrogen is needed
