Since the valency of phosophorous is 3 but they can expand their valency , because of vacent d orbital. It should be 3 because phosphorus has 5 electrons in its valence shell. ... Therefore it accepts 3 electrons and completes its octet because accepting 3 electrons would be much easier than to donate 5 electrons.
