The extract is from the "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. Pierre is a foolish and lazy man who does a circus act where walks on the tightrope and performs many other activities keeping the audience guessing at all times.

He even confronts a lion during the show and afterward, he takes a nap beneath a tree. When he wakes up, he thinks all that was a dream that he did and then he finds the circus was long gone and there was a note left for him that said 'Goodbye'.
