The poet decides to stand and wait till the snake has finished drinking because the poet was the second one to come over there. The snake was the first commer. Unless the snake was gone, he couldn't go to the trough

✔️ The poet decide to stand and wait till the snake has finished drinking. This tell us that the poet believes in the age long civilized practices of human intercourse and hospital. The snake was first to reach the water trough. Naturally, he had the first right to serve himself. The use of 'someone' instead of 'something' shows that the poet equates th snake to human beings and not to lower creature.
