In the play ‘The Merchant of Venice’ Portia considered helping Antonio because he was a very good friend of Bassanio, who was Portia’s husband.  

The consequences that were faced by Antonio were the result of helping Bassanio.  Not being able to rescue his beloved friend from the dire consequences Bassanio was worried and disturbed. Portia came to know that and for her affection towards her husband she takes the responsibility to save Antonio’s life.
