Radioactive disintegration occurs because chemical elements sometimes have 2 or more isotopes or in other words have different numbers of neutrons which affects their atomic weights. There are 800 radioactive isotopes. With uranium and thorium and lead, the radioactive isotopes which are unstable give off radioactivity as they decay. The rate at which they decay or change to a lower form of isotope tells us their age. This has enabled geologists to date igneous rocks using the half lives of radioactive decay, at least as far back as 200million years or more.
