Answer:
This i remember learning when we were in school in social studies if i remember correctly. The winter rains in the far west are due to the Westerlies. Above the subtropical highs in the Northern Hemisphere, and below the subtropical highs in the Southern Hemisphere, winds blow from the west towards the east. These winds are thus called westerly winds, after the direction from whence the winds come. This winter monsoon originating from the Arabian Sea usually brings cold air and modest precipitation along the northwest regions.

- If my memory serves me well, we learned this in social studies class in elementary school. The Westerlies are to blame for the winter rains in the far west.
- Winds blow from the west to the east above the subtropical highs in the Northern Hemisphere and below the subtropical highs in the Southern Hemisphere.
- As a result, these winds are referred to as westerly winds, after the direction from which they originate.
- This winter monsoon, which originates in the Arabian Sea, is known for bringing chilly air and sparse precipitation to the northwest.
Why does rainfall occur in winter?
- During the winter, the flow of air reverses.
- The continent cools rapidly forming a large area of high pressure over north central Asia, known as the Siberian High, and a smaller area over India.
- Now,the drier, colder air of the continent blows offshore creating the dry monsoon season.
Why does rainfall take place?
- What causes rain? Clouds are made of water droplets.
- Within a cloud, water droplets condense onto one another, causing the droplets to grow.
- When these water droplets get too heavy to stay suspended in the cloud, they fall to Earth as rain.
Where Does rainfall occur in winter?
- The regions that receive rainfall in winter in India are Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
- This is due to a phenomenon called North east monsoon.
- Northeast monsoon occurs during October- December and affects only the southern part of India.
- It is comparatively monsoon on a smaller scale.
