hello

salinity is the informal name for all of the chemicals/minerals that make ocean water have a different density than (distilled) plain water. The minerals give it a salty taste and yes, among them there is NaCl, plain salt.

At present we are extremely concerned with salinity as well as the temperature of ocean waters. Search salinity and coral reefs, or search the meridional overturning circulation, for examples.

Oceans can vary in salinity by deficiencies/overabundance of fresh water (evaporation/precipitation), as the measure of saltiness is given in the form of a concentration.

Salt concentration varies as well because oceans do not stand still. There are thermal and mechanical currents that push water around and make the ocean very heterogeneous.

Finally, ocean salinity depends critically on chemistry. The ocean is fairly complex, but at first order, there are critical balances of phosphates, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, chlorides, that are involved in biogeochemical processes…life affects the ocean, oceans affect life, and all are affected by radiation/temperature and mechanics. Search ocean biochemistry for more information.

why does salinity vary in different seas and oceans

Explanation:

  • Salinity is defined by the ratio of the salts that are dissolved in the water that results in the interaction of the atmospheric and the influx of the water brought by the streams of the rivers. As it's affected by the solar insolation and temperature variations and the amounts of rainfall and thus it varies greatly with the seas and the oceans.
  • The impact of the salinity can be found more in the seas that are enclosed and those that are found tropics and less in those that are found near the temperate or the polar areas.
  • The Atlantic ocean is known for the highest salinity and the mediterranean sea that is an enclosed sea and places in the antarctic and arctic are known for the lowest salinity of 33 parts per million as compared to those of the 37 ppm.
