Shillong is situated on the leeward side of the Khasi Hills, whereas Cherrapunji is on the windward side of the same mountain. Therefore, Cherrapunji gets full force of the South-west Monsoons of the Bay of Bengal current and Shillong being on the rain shadow side gets less rain.
