When Shylock was on the verge of cutting into Antonia, Portia, disguised as a learned  lawyer, reminded him that the bond allowed him a pound of flesh only, and made no  allowances for blood. She urged Shylock to continue collecting his pound of flesh, but  reminded him that if a drop of blood was spilled, then he would be guilty of conspiring  against the life of a Venetian citizen and all his land and goods will be confiscated by the  state. Stunned, Shylock hastily agreed to accept three times the sum, but Portia was insistent,  saying that Shylock must have the pound of flesh or nothing. When Shylock found that he  could not even take the original three thousand ducats in place of the pound of flesh, he  dropped the case, but Portia stopped him, reminding him of the penalty that non-citizens face when they threaten the life of a Venertian.
