as we know that air is the mixture of many gases. so plants use those gases for various purposes like for breaking food (oxygen), to make foods (carbon dioxide ) and nitrogen for synthesizing proteins.

Some plants specially aquatic plants have the cells with air filled. This is due to provide the BUOYANCY to the plants so that they would be able to float on water.
