Sound waves travel faster in water than in air because the particles of water(a liquid) are more closer to each other than air(a gas).

And we know that sound waves travel in atmosphere by vibrating its molecules.

So, the transfer of vibration in water will be more faster than in air because the particles of water are more close to each other. Therefore, the sound waves travel faster in water as contrasted to air.
