paraffins are saturated hydrocarbons
they are non polar
whereas alcohols are polar
water is also polar
a polar compound can dissolve in another polar compound only
so alcohols unlike paraffins dissolve in water or are miscible thus dont float like that of the immiscible paraffins

hope it is helpful
