Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. Colombo was the capital of Sri Lanka at that time. As time passed, the Sri Lankan government office and Parliament was transferred to the new city of Jayawardenepura Kot. And there new schools, colleges and government institutions were developed. Since the inauguration of the new Parliament at Jayawardenepura Kot in 1982, all government workers have been introduced to the new city. Hence, along with Colombo, Jayawardenepura Kot also came to be known as the new capital.

Role Of The Two Capitals Of Sri Lanka In The Governance Of The Country. Primarily, having two capitals was set to minimize traffic and population congestion in Colombo and thus minimize environmental damage due to congestion.
