this is because of refraction of light.
A stick appears bent because of apparent depth
apparent depth is actually not the real depth but is the result of refraction of light . Because of which the observer sees the stick bent instead of standing straight. Moreover the stick bends inwards beacuse the air is a rarer medium than water so the stick appears to bend towards normal
