Why does Sudha Murry surprised when her grandmother touched her feet

She was surprised when her grandmother touched her feet because normally only younger people touches the feet of elders to show them respect but her grandmother was quite old and for an old lady to touch feet of a child is very rare. However later she told her granddaughter that she just touched her feet to show respect to her teacher.

And She was glad to know that her grandmother had touched her feet not in the point that she is elder or younger but that She is a teacher for her.
