why does sun appears bigger and brighter during sunrise and sunset

The sun before the setting looks bigger because of atmospheric refraction.
The light rays from upper and lower disk of the sun, bends towards the normal and reaches observer's eye.
This makes atmosphere behave like a large lens and the observer gets an enlarged image of sun.
