In Terence Rattigan's The Browning Version, Taplow says that he does not consider Mr Crocker-Harris to be a sadist, even though the latter has been the strictest teacher in school. While the other masters derived pleasure by inflicting pain or horror upon the students, Mr Crocker-Harris was a different kind of person altogether. According to Taplow, Mr Crocker-Harris would not have been such a frightening figure if he was sadistic towards his students. The reverential fear, or awe, he has garnered from among his students in all these years is because he barely shows any emotions. As Taplow says, "...He’s all shrivelled up  inside like a nut..", and he thinks Mr Crocker-Harris apparently hates those very people who seem to like him.

Frank, on listening to Taplow about Mr Crocker-Harris's nature, remarks that it is unusual for a student to not take advantage of such an indifferent man as Mr Crocker-Harris himself, implying the fact that Taplow could have made progress if he were smarter; so that he could have got his remove from Mr Crocker-Harris sooner.
