Taplow called Crocker Harris a hardy human because when Taplow had asked Mr.Harris if the latter had given him a remove, his reply was that he had given Taplow exactly what he deserved.

Concept:

The above-asked question is from 'The Browning Version', a play written by Terence Rattigan which involves three main characters - Taplow, Mr. Crocker Harris, and Frank. The scene of the play is set in a school. Taplow comes to do extra work for Mr. Crocker Harris as he missed one day before. Another master Frank who is younger than Mr. Harris sees Taplow waiting. It is the last day of the term. Then the conversation goes on between all the three characters.

Answer:

Taplow feels that doing extra work wouldn't make any difference to Mr. Harris. He told Taplow that he got what he deserved. Taplow doubts that he might be awarded some extra marks to make him do some extra work. He feels that Mr. harris is worse than a sadist and hence calls him 'hardly human'.
