Why does temperature decrease in the mesosphere and increase in the thermosphere?

Within the mesosphere, temperature, decreases with increasing height, due to decreasing solar heating and increasing cooling by CO 2 radiative emission. ... The temperature increases rapidly in this layer due to the absorption of huge amounts of incoming high energy solar radiation by atoms of nitrogen and oxygen.
