Abel Merryweather say "it's a bit late to say it now"'
it means that the daughters of him are behaved so bad with him.That they started to divide the properties that his father has ......
when able comes down he sees that the properties are been dividing between them ...... So they daughter said him sorry for their mistake.... 
THEREFORE he said "it's a bit late to say it now"

It is because he realised that his daughters looked after him only for his money and they behaved very badly with him.Also he wanted to marrh a woman.
