Why does the artery divide into smaller blood vessels?

Artery being thick walled cannot help in diffusion process of oxygen carbon dioxide, etc. So it divides into smaller vessels and the smallest one are known as capillaries.  And artery being big in size cannot reach to the smaller regions of the body......   I hope it helps.....
