The narrator's quest for getting his friend Todd to pay him back, is a lost cause because Todd does not seem to remember that he owes the narrator. Despite the obvious hints that the narrator is throwing at Todd, he just does not seem to remember that he took a dollar from his friend and promised to pay it back. This may be in part due to the fact that Todd didn't really consider the dollar as a loan or more likely, he just completely forgot. This means that the author will continue fruitlessly to hint at Todd unless he directly asks for his dollar back.
