why does the author talk about the accident he and his wife met with?

Met with an accident" (meaning to have suffered an accident) is used in AE, but it is a bit formal unless being used in an arch manner requiring quotation marks/inverted commas: After double-crossing the Mafia, he "met with an accident" involving concrete shoes and the East River.
