Boron is an electron deficient element and it has electronic configuration of 1s22s22p1.
It cannot accept the 5 electrons needed to form the ionic bond.
So the bonds formed are either by sharing of electrons or by accepting the lone pair of electron donated by Lewis base.
Thus, the boron form covalent bond instead of ionic bond.
