The British wanted to transform these lines into cultivated land because of the following reasons : -
(1) They considered forests as wildernesses and unproductive.
(2) They wanted to convert this into cultivated land to enhance the income of the state by raising revenues from these lands.
(3) Due to industrialisation in England there was a need for raw materials for the industries.
(4) Due to the increasing urbanization there was a need for rubber, tea, coffee, Indigo etc.
(5) So the government gave out land at cheap rates to European foresters to make way for plantation crops.
