C.A. Bowels uses the imagery of the river to portray human life through various stages of being. Thus, when she addresses the river as ‘swelling river’, she is implying that the ‘little river’ has now grown and become a bigger river, just as a child develops into a youth. The word ‘swelling’ refers to the process of growing up, developing or becoming mature.
