why does the convict called the prison a hell?

The convict calls the prison as hell because it is like it. He has been beaten mercylessly and chained up like a wild beast and hound. He is made to eat filth. He is covered with vermin, while in jail. His sole has been taken. He has been given merely a number 15729.
