Why does the cricket player move his hand backward while catching a ball??

When a Cricket ball is travelling in pace, the impact can be a lot to take. So, when you take your hand backwards that is the direction of which the ball is coming to you, it slowly reduces the momentum and hence reduces the impact to be safe.
