why does the dry HCL gas not change the colour of blue Litmus Paper into red litmus,but in the presence of water HCL gas turns blue Litmus into red.In the reaction what is the role of water

The litmus paper doesnt work wothout water water is a part of the reaction between hcl and litmus

because dry HCl doesn't have hydrogen molecules in it water HCl completely ionised in water to produce hydrogen which is acidic in nature and it turns blue litmus red
