Why does the electric field lines due to static charge not form a closed loop?

Electric lines of force due to a dipole start from the positive charge and end at the negative charge. ... If a field line formed a closed loop, then each equation would equal zero because there would zero divergence of the electric field which mean that electric monopoles could not exist
