Why does the food taste different when we close our nose?

It is due to the blockage of olfactory bulb (either you block manually or in cold). They are the series of nerve endings in the nose, that not only allows to smell, but to taste at the same time. If the nose is clogged, and swollen with mucus, it may have a tough time smelling things, and in turn tasting things.
