Why does the forest floor seem spongy

that's mainly because of the air(water too) trapped inside the enormous amount of leaves that cover the forest floor.....which with time also decay n covered up by newly fallen leaves...hence give it a spongy appearance

The forest floor seems spongy due to the present of a brown coloured substance called humus. Humus is brown or black organic matter consisting of partially or wholly decayed plant and animal material in the top layer of soil like fallen leaves, dead plants and animals buried in the soil etc.
