No, heaps of sand do not form a pyramidal shape. They form a cone. Even if you form a square outline with rows of bricks on the four sides, the bottom would be a square for all visual purposes, but if you remove one brick it becomes a cone. Dry sand will have an angle of repose of 34 degrees. At that slope the heap of sand is stable. Different materials and under different moisture conditions, the angle of repose will vary.
