Ice floats on water because density of ice is less than water. In common language we can say ice floats on water because it is lighter than water. Any solid when place in a liquid buoyancy force that is equal to the weight of volume of liquid displaced by it.

ice is a solid but still floats on water and we know that solids are denser as compared to liquids but in this case, the solid which we are taking is one and ice has some small gaps due to water's freezing and hence gets comparatively less dense.
